Using the smartphone while driving (reading the screen, sending messages, using the phone or the voice assistant) dramatically increases the risk of accidents. To sensitize drivers, the app measures the number of times the smartphone display has been unlocked and the total distance and time the phone screen has remained on.
The application also detects phone calls made during trips and their duration.
It is the combination of these two factors contributing to increased road risk that allows a more accurate score to be returned and, above all, to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.
This function differentiates between phone calls that are made by handling the phone and calls that are allowed when the driver uses the hands-free kit in the vehicle.
The purpose of the distraction score is not to judge the driver but to make him/her aware of the risk.
Indeed, there is no miracle solution to reduce smartphone use while driving. However, recent studies indicate that driver awareness is key to changing behavior.
